Meet Kate Southorn
BVSc CertAVP(Equine Dentistry) MRCVS Advanced Practitioner in Equine Dentistry
Kate Southorn graduated in 2001 from the University of Liverpool with commendation and a Distinction in Equine studies. After graduation, Kate joined the team at Springwood Veterinary Centre then joined the equine team at Markeaton in 2002.
Kate subsequently spent 4 years in equine practice in Lancashire with a bias to stud work/AI and dental care and the re-joined the equine team at Scarsdale Vets in October 2008.
Kate is one of the BEVA approved AI vets, is an Inspector of Riding Establishments. She has completed all three dental modules as part of the RCVS Cert AVP in Equine Dentistry (2012) and plans to complete the remaining equine practice module in the next year.
Kate enjoys many aspects of equine practice, but has particular interest in performance and advanced dentistry, surgery, reproduction and artificial insemination and wound management. She also enjoys internal medicine and dermatological cases.
Outside of work, Kate has 2 lively little boys, 6 chickens, 3 ducks, 4 lambs, an elderly spaniel, two ponies and a very tolerant husband. She enjoys making American pancakes on a Sunday morning for her family; and drawing and painting when she gets some time to herself.
Kate occasionally breeds her own ponies, but mainly takes them showing. Her 128cm show pony Highbent Tiffany qualified for the RIHS and multiple other championships last year. Kate and her family recently moved to a smallholding and seem to spend all their time fencing and mending things but is hoping to get her home-bred welsh section B, Stanrose Nimrod (Nemo to his friends) into the ring under saddle as a lead rein show hunter pony this winter.
