Darwin is a 9-year-old golden retriever, who had a history of lameness when she was younger.
She was referred to our orthopaedic specialists, who investigated with a CT scan. She was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma on her right forelimb – her leg was amputated, and she received chemotherapy. Since having the amputation, she has had physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to help her mobility – some of the initial sessions were covered by insurance.
As well as this, Darwin has also suffered with various skin and allergy issues, in addition to having two lumpectomies – all were covered by insurance.
Most recently, she was hospitalised with a large abscess next to her stomach and pancreatitis. She had blood, urine and faecal tests, X-rays and ultrasounds, and had to have surgery to repair the damage and spent over a week in the intensive care unit. She also had a gastrotomy tube placed, as she was not able to eat for herself. However, she recovered well and went home not long after! The vast majority of the cost for this was covered by insurance.
Over the years, Darwin has been very unlucky with her health – her owner is so glad that she had insurance. It has saved her thousands of pounds!
