Christmas Treats For Horses

We all deserve a treat at Christmas and so do our equine friends. Here are some tips for offering treats over the festive period.

The general rules apply, treats should be sliced thinly (to avoid choking) and fed in small quantities. Apples and carrots are the main staples, but there are also some alternatives and some to avoid.

Good Treats For Horses

  • Bananas
  • Pear
  • Celery
  • Strawberries
  • Melon
  • Beetroot

  • Swede
  • Turnip
  • Parsnip
  • Camomile
  • Mint

Bad Treats

  • Onions

  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels spouts

Equine Christmas Treats Recipe


  • 3 grated carrots
  • 1 cup of cool mix
  • 1 cup of porridge oats
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons of treacle/molasses


Mix the ingredients together and roll into small balls place on a lightly greased baking tray and bake for approximately 20 minutes at 180 ̊C.

Remember, laminitis prone equines should stick to fruit and vegetable treats or commercially produced low sugar options and all treats should be fed in small quantities.
